Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 Official: It Is The Low-Cost Chip 2023-24

Qualcomm has officially unveiled the new Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, a chip dedicated to low-cost smartphones arriving on the market in the coming months. The SoC presents several innovations for its technical data sheet.

Qualcomm renews its range of smartphone chips by introducing the new Snapdragon 4 Gen 2. It is a chip intended to equip low- and medium-low-end Android smartphones. Compared to the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1, the new SoC unveiled by Qualcomm presents several new features to improve the user experience for users who rely on budget smartphones.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2: Technical Characteristics

Qualcomm has chosen to renew the Snapdragon 4 chip series by presenting a new generation that renounces some elements (probably not very useful for the low-end) and aims to maximize performance and operating efficiency. At the base of the new chip is the Samsung 4 nm production process (the Gen 1 version is made, however, at 6 nm).

However, little changes for the CPU. The new generation of Snapdragon 4 offers an Octa-Core CPU with a 2+6 configuration. The chip integrates 2 Kyro Cores, derived from the Cortex-A78 Cores, flanked by 6 Cortex-A55 Cores to manage simpler activities. Qualcomm has anticipated a 10% performance increase (primarily related to an increase in maximum CPU clock frequencies).

However, Qualcomm has not disclosed any details regarding the GPU integrated into the SoC. It should also be noted that the new Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, unlike the Gen 1 version, does not have the Hexagon DSP, a component dedicated to managing AI calculations, and no longer supports three rear cameras (little used, in general, by low-end smartphones).

Smartphones with the new Qualcomm chip will be able to have up to a maximum of two rear cameras. Also note the possibility of managing displays with Full HD + resolution and refresh rates up to 120 Hz, a value that also represents the maximum frame rate in gaming.

As for memories, smartphones with Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 can count on LPDDR55 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage memories. As for connectivity, there is the Snapdragon X61 modem which guarantees the possibility of accessing 5G networks. Finally, note the possibility of using the Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1 standards.

Which Smartphones Will Have The Snapdragon 4 Gen 2?

The first smartphones with Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC are approaching their debut. The company has anticipated that its new chip will hit the market in the second half of 2023. Among Qualcomm’s partners, it will be up to Redmi to launch the first smartphone equipped with the new chip. In the following months, however, several other OEMs will offer the SoC.

The new Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 is set to become the new low-cost smartphone benchmark for 2023-2024. The chip should be used in many models, arriving in the next 12-18 months, for a price range between 150 euros and 300 euros.
